AUGUSTA, Ga. – Redshirt-senior guard
Christal Williams (Fort Pierce, Fla.) picked up the first Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor of her career, and helped set a program record with a third consecutive honoree, as announced by the league on Monday, March 2.
Â
It marks the first time in the illustrious history of the women's basketball program that they have had three straight winners and the four on the season ties the overall mark. The latter equals Drameka Griggs' record of four selections during the 2012-13 season.
Â
Williams (Riverdale, Ga.) came into her own with one of the best weeks of her career as a Laker, averaging 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game as she helped fuel what has become a 10 game winning streak.
She opened the week at Flagler (2/26) where she was a critical factor in a 75-71 win that kept that streak alive and strengthened Clayton State's NCAA Tournament chances. In that one she dropped a career-high 25 points, going 7-of-13 from the field and 10-of-11 at the foul line. She also hauled in six boards while dishing out three assists and swiping a pair of steals.
Williams would finish the week with another clutch performance, this time in a stunning 73-64 upset of No. 13/17 North Georgia (2/29). Behind her 19 points (7-of-8 at the foul line) and a pair of rebounds, that victory would run their win streak to 10 (which started following a loss in Dahlonega) while snapping UNG's eight game stretch.
Â
On the season she is averaging 9.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 3.2 assists and 1.3 assists.

CLAYTON STATE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HISTORY
Since gaining provisional membership in the Peach Belt in 1995-96 and full-time membership in 1997-98, the Lakers have had a total of 27 Player of the Week selections among just 13 players. Most recently, Wilson was the last to be so honored as she earned her third award of the season on February 24, 2020.
Â
All-time, Griggs and Joya Collier hold the program record with four overall selections. Griggs earned all four of hers during the 2012-13 season (12/4, 1/7, 1/22, 2/18) while Collier earned two in 1998-99 (12/14, 1/18) and two in 1999-2000 (1/10, 2/21). The latter was also the first Clayton State women's basketball player to earn the honor.
Â
Overall, the Lakers have had at least one player selected as Player of the Week in 14 of their 23 seasons as a full-time member of the league. Seven of those have seen multiple selections.
Â
Clayton State returns to action on Wednesday, March 4 when they host No. 6 seed Francis Marion in a Peach Belt Conference Quarterfinal. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at The Loch.
