Trip to Rival Columbus State Up Next as Clayton State Hits The Road For Midweek Meeting

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (6-17, 4-12 PBC) men's basketball looks to get back into the race for the final spot in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as they head to rival Columbus State (14-10, 9-7 PBC) on Wednesday, February 19. Game time is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. at The Loch following the women's contest.

The Lakers find themselves sitting in the 11th spot but are only three games back of both Flagler and Georgia College for the final two spots. They have split with GC and have the opportunity to do so with the Saints on Wednesday, February 26, which would mean a tie with either or both squads would go to league tiebreaker procedures.

Clayton State trails the all-time series against Columbus 31-19, one that dates back to the first meeting on February 17, 1996. Columbus State won the first five meetings through February 23, 1998 before Clayton State won four in a row through February 9, 2000. The Cougars won a then series high seven straight and 10 of the previous 11 since February 16, 2011.

Despite trailing by a sizeable margin in the series history, that is a tide that has begun to turn in recent years. The Lakers notched their first season sweep of Columbus State in 2016-17, marking the first time that had happened since the 1999-2000 season. The lynchpin of that sweep was an impressive 100-70 victory in Columbus on February 8, 2017 and was their first road victory since January 17, 2007.

Then came the 2017-18 season when Clayton State took all three meetings, delivering a 95-76 win at The Loch on January 27, an 84-67 decision on February 24 and an 89-83 win four days later on February 28. The latter was a PBC Quarterfinal that allowed the Lakers to host the league championship for the first time in program history.

Last year they ran that stretch to a series-high tying seven in a row with a 90-81 victory in Columbus on February 2 and an 85-78 decision a month later in Morrow on March 2, 2019. Most recently the Cougars snapped that streak with a 77-72 victory at The Loch on January 22.
