GREENWOOD, S.C. – Senior guard
Kyle Kincey (Tallahassee, Fla.) dropped 27 points but Clayton State (3-12, 1-7 PBC) was unable to overcome a pair of massive runs as they dropped a 92-77 decision at Lander (12-4, 6-2 PBC) in an NCAA Division II men's basketball game on Monday, January 20.
Â
Kincey scored his 27 on impressive 10-of-14 shooting and was joined by redshirt-junior center
Tionne Williams, Jr. (Phenix City, Ala.) with 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard
Arusha Hunter (Snellville, Ga.) added nine points and sophomore forward
Ricardo Saams, Jr. (Miramar, Fla.) finished with seven points and four rebounds to round out the top performers.
Â
Neither team would gain a commanding advantage through the first two media timeouts as they were separated by no more than five points during that time. That spread was a 14-9 Lander lead that was quickly dispatched by a 5-0 mini run by Kincey to knot it up at the 12:36 mark.
Â
At that point the Bearcats drained back-to-back threes as part of an 8-0 run to stretch to retake the lead at 22-14 a minute and a half later. That would be part of a larger overall run of 19-4 as LU extended to a 33-18 margin with 8:27 left in the opening half. Over the rest of that first stanza Clayton State would close with a 19-12 stretch to get the deficit under double-digits at 46-37 by the break.
Â
Over the first five plus minutes of the second half Lander's lead would fluctuate between 11 and 13 points before landing on 60-49 by the 14:15 mark. Over the next 4:20 the Bearcats would take that particular 11 point lead and extend it to 24 behind a 17-4 outburst to push to a 77-53 margin. Over the remaining 9:55, the Lakers would get the deficit to 17 on three occasions before reaching the final margin of 92-77.
Â
Sidney Robinson led the Bearcats with 19 points and four assists and was joined by Elijah Alston with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting. DaJuan Moorer just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards and Tyler Brevard notched 15 points, going 6-of-7 from the foul line. Deon Berrien closed things out with eight points, six caroms, two steals and a pair of assists.
Â
The Lakers return home following their three game road trip as they host rival Columbus State on Wednesday, January 22. Game time is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. following the women's contest.
