Clayton State 2018-19 Season in Review: Men's Cross Country

MORROW, Ga. – With the close of the 2018-19 campaign, the Clayton State Sports Information Office is producing a Season in Review for each of the program's 11 sports.
 
That series began with the fall season and will progress to the winter and spring campaigns. Each week reviews will be released on Mondays and Wednesdays until concluding with the final spring sport on Monday, July 8 and the Athletics Season in Review on Wednesday, July 10. Today we take a look back at the 2018 Men's Cross Country season.

2018 Season in Review
  • Competed in six meets, including the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship Meet (11/17)
  • As a team, finished second at UWG Wolves XC Season Opener (8/31) and third at Jaguar XC Invitational (9/22)
  • Finished in 18th place at the NCAA Division II South East Region Championship
  • United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team (Seventh Overall)
 
Individual Achievements/Honors
  • Delivered dominant performance at West Georgia with Evan Ortiz, T.J. Witherspoon and Zach Czerniak finishing second, fourth and fifth, respectively
  • Ortiz led team in five of seven meets, including 7-of-59 at Jaguar XC Invitational. Witherspoon and Ryan Polk finished 18th and 23rd respectively for a solid showing
  • Ortiz notched personal best times in the 7k (23:51.90), 8k (26:24.00) and 10k (35:57.89). Latter came at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship
  • Witherspoon set PR's in 7k (26:04.94) at West Georgia and 8k (26:46.80) at PBC Championships
  • Earned four PBC All-Academic honorees in Anuj Patel, Witherspoon, Ortiz and Jason Dang
