AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior
Destiny Johnson (New Iberia, La.) and Clayton State women's track & field continue to assault the Peach Belt Conference record books as the presumptive NCAA qualifier earned her league record third Women's Field Athlete of the Week honor as announced by the league on Tuesday, May 14.
Â
That achievement is twofold when it comes to PBC records as Johnson is the first women's track & field athlete to earn three field awards in one season and is just the second individual, men's or women's, to accomplish that feat. The only other to do so is Shorter's Stefanos Koufidis during the 2014 campaign.
Â
As a team, Clayton State has now earned five field awards this season, equaling Nova Southeastern's five from the 2017-18 season. No men's team has achieved that.
Â
As one of just a handful of Lakers striving to earn a spot in the 2019 NCAA Division II Championships at the Mount Olive First Chance and Last Chance meets from May 11-12, Johnson appears to have accomplished that feat.
Â
Competing in the high jump on both days, she opened with a mark of 1.66, just shy of the NCAA Provisional mark (1.68m) and finished tied for second out of seven individuals.
Â
It would be a different story on Sunday, May 12, however, as she cleared a personal best 1.72-meters to land a strong qualifying mark. That tied her for second out of eight competitors but the real story was where that height placed her.
Â
Entering the day, only 18 individuals nationwide had cleared that height at the Division II level.
To put that in perspective, the NCAA has taken at least 20 individuals in the high jump in each of the past five championships and the height of 1.72-meters, when achieved there, has placed no lower than sixth in the last three.
Â
Overall, Clayton State has collected 13 such field honors spread across five different individuals. Johnson's third selection goes along with the first two earned by freshman
Kiara Green (Ty, Ty, Ga.). Johnson earned her previous honors on April 9 and 30 while Green was PBC Field Athlete of the Week on March 12 and 26.
