Three First Place Finishes, 10 Top-10 Outings Highlight Savannah State Eye Opener for Clayton State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – If the opening outdoor meet of the season is any indication it could be a very successful 2019 campaign for Clayton State women's track & field as the club delivered three first place finishes among 10 Top-10 finishes at the Savannah State Eye Opener on Saturday, March 2.

As a team, the Lakers made history as they won the meet, placing ahead of 13 other teams with 94 points. It is believed that that is the first meet victory in the program's 22 seasons.

Junior Nia Elmore (Hinesville, Ga.) delivered one of those three top performances as she went 1-of-26 in the 100-meters with a time of 12.51 and was part of the 4x400-meter relay that finished 2-of-10 with a time of 4:07.20. On the latter she teamed with sophomores Corta'Nasha Mutcherson (Savannah, Ga.), Na'ilah Allen (McDonough, Ga.) and Chaviya Jackson (Albany, Ga.).

Senior Destiny Johnson (New Iberia, La.) came in 1-of-10 in the high jump with a height of 1.65-meters and senior Carla Catala Martin (Barcelona, Spain) was 1-of-18 in the 5,000-meters at 19:06.96 to round out the first place finishes.

The Lakers were far from done with impressive performances, however. Freshman thrower Kiara Green (Ty Ty, Ga.) delivered Top-10 finishes in each of her three events, headlined by a 4-of-33 mark in the discus (36.94m). She followed that with a 7-of-20 outing in the hammer (34.05m) and was 9-of-25 with a distance of 10.33-meters in the shotput.

Allen finished 2-of-18 in the 800-meters (2:26.02) and senior Ariel Boyd-Ghani (Powder Springs, Ga.) was right behind her in third with a time of 2:26.67. Mutcherson added to the individual performances as she went 5-of-25 in the 400-meters (59.62) and 6-of-19 in the 200-meters (26.32).

Junior Lynnet Kosgei (Eldoret, Kenya) notched a top five finish as she went 4-of-18 in the 5,000-meters (20:50.35) and junior Shockera Betty (Tallahassee, Fla.) was 5-of-29 in the long jump with a mark of 5.18-meters.

Freshman Stephanie Escobar (Forest Park, Ga.) added a 5-of-18 outing in the 5,000-meters (20:51.02) and Jackson posted a 6-of-25 finish in the 400-meters (1:00.67) and 7-of-19 in the 200-meters, running a time of 26.42 in the latter.

The Lakers are back action in just under two weeks when they head to the Doc Anderson Invitational on Friday, March 15. Hosted by Division I Troy, that meet will take place in Troy, Alabama.
