AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior guard
Aubrey McRae (Augusta, Ga.) has become the first individual in program history to earn consecutive Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors following the announcement of his second straight award by the league on Monday, February 11.
Â
McRae (Augusta, Ga.), after earning his first such recognition last week, showed no signs of letting up as he averaged 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals over the course of two games this past week. He also shot .552 from the field, .438 beyond the arc and .737 at the foul line.
Â
Taking on Young Harris (2/6), the Laker sharpshooter delivered 22 points, knocking down 4-of-8 triples and all six free throws, while adding three assists, a steal and a pair of boards in a 121-115 victory. He accomplished that in just 21 minutes of action.
Â
McRae rounded out the week with one of the best performances of his career at Francis Marion (2/9). In 37 minutes he dropped a career-high 31 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal. It also equaled his career-high for minutes played in a game.
Â
On the season he is averaging 15.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting .446 from the field, .409 from three-point range and .801 at the foul line.
"We are extremely proud of Aubrey," said head men's basketball coach
Jimmy Link. "He's been playing really well of late, putting in the work its awesome that he's the first guy in program history to win it back-to-back."
Â
McRae's selection marks the second this season by a Laker and is only the third time that the program has had multiple such honors in a single season. Most recently Timmy Downs (1/31/11) and Brandon Robinson (2/28) accomplished the feat during the 2010-11 season while Robert Conley, the only other individual to earn multiple awards in a season, did so on December 7, 1998 and February 1, 1999 of the 1998-99 campaign.
Â
On top of that, McRae becomes not only the first player in men's basketball history to earn awards in back-to-back weeks but it is the first time the program has accomplished that.
Â
Overall, Clayton State has had 14 selections since Corey Johnson earned the award during the 1996-97 season, which was just the second year as a provisional member of the PBC.
Â
Those selections have also been spread out among just 10 players in that 22-year span. Conley holds the all-time mark with three selections over the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Additionally, they have had at least one player chosen for the award in 11 of those seasons.
Â
McRae and the Lakers are back in action on Wednesday, February 13 when they travel to Georgia College. Game time is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. in Milledgeville, Georgia following the conclusion of the women's contest.
