MORROW, Ga. – Coming off a much needed league win, Clayton State (6-12, 3-9 PBC) men's basketball will look to continue that performance at rival Columbus State (9-9, 5-8 PBC) as both battle to improve their odds of earning a spot in the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Tournament when they meet on Saturday, February 2. Game time is set for approximately 3:30 p.m. in Columbus, Georgia following the women's contest.
The Lakers currently sit in 10
th place in the PBC standings with the top eight earning the right to vie for the league championship at the beginning of March. Flagler sits in ninth with a 4-8 league mark but the Cougars also stand in the way as they hold the final transfer spot with a 5-8 record.
While Clayton State has dropped the first of two meetings to the Saints, this will be the first of two against Columbus and provides an opportunity to take another step towards qualification while damaging the chances of a team in front of them.
Additional teams that are in reach begin at the No. 5 spot with Young Harris (7-5), Georgia College (6-5) and Lander (6-7). Against those teams the Lakers split with the Bearcats, lost at YHC and beat GC at The Loch.
Clayton State trails the
all-time series against Columbus 30-17, one that dates back to the first meeting on February 17, 1996. Columbus State won the first five meetings through February 23, 1998 before Clayton State won four in a row through February 9, 2000. The Cougars won a series high seven straight and 10 of the last 14 since February 16, 2011.
Despite trailing by a sizeable margin in the series history, that is a tide that has begun to turn in recent years. Last season the Lakers put a major dent in that stretch with their first season sweep of the Cougars since the 1999-2000 season. They accomplished that with an 86-79 win on January 21, 2017 in Morrow and an impressive 100-70 victory in Columbus on February 8, 2017. The latter was their first road victory since January 17, 2007.
Then came the 2017-18 season when Clayton State took all three meetings, delivering a 95-76 win at The Loch on January 27, an 84-67 decision on February 24 and an 89-83 win four days later on February 28. The latter was a PBC Quarterfinal that allowed the Lakers to host the league championship for the first time in program history.
