Clayton State and No. 3 Flagler Set to Battle for PBC Supremacy in League Championship Game

MORROW, Ga. – An improbable run through the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Tournament will come to a close one way or another as Clayton State (8-6-3, 5-5-1 PBC) women's soccer battles No. 3 Flagler (18-0-1, 10-0-1 PBC) in the championship game on Sunday, November 17. Game time is set for 12 p.m. in Augusta, Georgia.

The game will be played at Blanchard Woods Park but at an adjacent field due to heavy rains and three games on the main field yesterday. The winner will earn an automatic berth in the 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament field which will be announced at 6 p.m. on Monday, November 18.

Clayton State reaches the championship game after a pair of 1-1 ties that saw them notch two penalty kick shootout victories in a single postseason for just the second time in program history. They beat No. 3 Seed UNC Pembroke 4-1 on November 12 on the road and defeated No. 18 North Georgia 5-4 on November 15. It is the first time they have notched back-to-back PK victories. The only other time with two in a PBC Tournament came in the 2013 championships season.

PEACH BELT CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Lakers have qualified for all but two PBC Tournaments since the league began sponsoring women's soccer in 2000 and have appeared on nine of the last 10 brackets. In those previous 17 appearances, they have won a total of 12 games, including their first game of the tournament six times (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2013, 2014).

Twice they have won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship, doing so in 2005 and 2013. In 2005 they defeated Columbus State 2-1 in overtime and knocked off Georgia College in 2013. In the latter the teams went to overtime tied at 2-2 before Clayton State eventually pulled it out on penalty kicks by a 4-2 margin.

SERIES HISTORY VS. FLAGLER
All-time Clayton State is 5-5-2 against Flagler, dating to the first meeting on October 26, 1996. Following that 1-1 tie in St. Augustine, Florida, the Saints would notch a 2-1 victory on their home field in the next meeting – 13 years later on September 26, 2009. Since then the teams have met each year as members of the PBC with the Lakers holding a 5-4-1 advantage over that time.

All five wins in the series history have been by shutout, including four in a row from September 21, 2013 through October 30, 2016. No. 17 Flagler posted a 3-0 victory on October 28, 2017, their first shutout win in series history, and notched a 5-0 decision on September 22, 2018 at Laker Field. Most recently they escaped with a narrow 2-1 win in St. Augustine on October 5, 2019.
