Clayton State Drops Heartbreaking 2-1 Decision to Lander on Overtime Score

MORROW, Ga. – In a game that featured an own goal, a penalty kick score and constant rain, Clayton State (3-2-2, 1-2-0 PBC) fell 2-1 in overtime as Lander (6-1-1, 1-1-1 PBC) narrowly escaped Laker Field in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Wednesday, September 26.

Playing on a rain soaked field, the offense might have been slowed down but certainly not for lack of trying. The Lakers fired off a whopping 11 shots and put five of those on net over the first 45 minutes while the Bearcats would manage four shots with half of those on goal.

Coming out of the break deadlocked at 0-0, it would be LU that would break up the stalemate as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 51st minute. Juliette Vidal capitalized on that opportunity as she beat the keeper to the left for a 1-0 lead at the 50:38 mark.

It would remain a one goal game for nearly 34 minutes as the teams pushed into the 85th minute. On a serve from the right side by Clayton State the ball would end up on the left side of the goal. Coming out of the scrum, the ball ended up being put home by a Lander player for an own goal that knotted the score at 1-1 with 84:09 gone by.

Neither team would mount a significant charge in the final minutes of regulation and they would head to overtime. For the Lakers, it would be their third of the season and second for the Bearcats. Through the first six minutes the clubs would combine for just a foul and an offside.

It would be in the 98th minute, however, where the damage would be done. Lander's Kelcie Fisher collected a ball and hit Brianna Taylor down the middle. From there she fired on net and put home the game-winner on the right side of the net for the 2-1 victory.

LU was led by goals from Vidal and Taylor and Fisher notched the only assist. Both Taylor and Emily Jermstad fired off three shots and each put two on net to round out the offense. In net, Sarah Owen went the distance, playing 97:09 and making 11 saves against just the own goal to improve to 6-1-1.

Clayton State ripped off 19 shots and put 12 on net but didn't connect on a goal of their own. That being the case, junior defenders Janne Brouer (Aarhus, Denmark) and Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) each had five shots with three on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Richards (Huddersfield, England) played all 97:09 and allowed two goals against four saves to fall to 3-2-2 overall.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they head to No. 4 Columbus State. Game time is set for 5 p.m. in Columbus, Georgia.
