Clayton State Takes on No. 2 Seed Lander in Peach Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinal

MORROW, Ga. – Following the end of the regular season, Clayton State (14-14, 11-11 PBC) heads to No. 2 seed Lander (22-6, 17-5 PBC) for a Peach Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinal on Wednesday, February 28. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Greenwood, South Carolina.

The Lakers lead the all-time series 20-14, dating back to the first meeting on January 31, 1998. In the history of the series, Clayton State held a nine-game win streak from January 15, 2005, through March 15, 2008, which is the longest between the two teams.

Clayton State won five of six meetings between March 3, 2012 and December 17, 2015 but the Bearcats have taken the last five. That includes a 92-71 decision on January 4, 2017, a 97-60 victory in the PBC Quarterfinals on March 4, 2017, 93-59 on December 19, 2017 and the most recent victory of 83-56 on January 15, 2018 at The Loch.

In the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, the teams have met six times with Clayton State holding a 4-2 advantage. Four of those came in the semifinals and the last three were all at Columbus State. This will be the second time that the Lakers have faced LU in the tournament in Greenwood, South Carolina.

The first four meetings all went the Lakers way, beginning with a 74-68 decision in the semis at Augusta State on March 5, 2005. They would meet again on March 6, 2010 when Clayton State derailed No. 9 Lander's bid for a spot in the championship game with a 79-77 overtime victory on USC Aiken's campus.

Two years later on March 3, 2012, the Laker's defeated the Bearcats No. 23 ranked team by a score of 71-63 at Columbus State. The stretch of meeting every two years continued with a narrow 75-73 Clayton State victory in the quarterfinals on March 6, 2014, also at Columbus, before Lander posted a 95-67 semifinal win on March 5, 2016. Last season ended with a 97-60 victory for the Bearcats in the quarterfinals.

In terms of championships, the Lakers went through the Bearcats for two of their first three PBC Tournament titles, knocking them off in the semifinals of 2005 and 2010. They won their other championships in 2007 and 2013. Lander has won four PBC Tournament Championships, earning that distinction in 1999, 2008, 2009 and 2016.

Coverage of the game will be available on live stats and live video on www.ClaytonStateSports.com.
