Battle for First Place in the Peach Belt Conference as Clayton State Hosts No. 18/24 UNC Pembroke on Homecoming

MORROW, Ga. – In a game that could very well decide the Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Champion, Clayton State (18-5, 16-3 PBC) hosts No. 18/24 UNC Pembroke (21-4, 17-2 PBC) on Homecoming on Saturday, February 17. The game is set for a special tip-off of 5:30 p.m. following the women's game at The Loch.

Entering the game, UNCP holds a one game advantage over the Lakers but that would disappear with a Clayton State victory and also even the season series at 1-1. By virtue of PBC tiebreakers, a win would give them the advantage as a result of a season sweep of third place Francis Marion. The Braves lost their first meeting with the Patriots and will face them this coming Wednesday, February 21 but cannot improve their standing through that contest.

The Lakers are an impressive 21-7 all-time against the Braves dating back to the first meeting on January 11, 1998. After dropping two of the first three meetings, Clayton State has dominated the series, going 20-4. That included a 12-game win streak from February, 17, 2001 through December 1, 2007 and a current run of eight wins in the last 11 outings.

Most recently they had a three-game win streak highlighted by a 69-66 win in Pembroke on January 19, 2015. On that day, the Braves were ranked No. 14/15 in the country. Last year UNCP snapped that stretch with an 81-74 decision in Pembroke and made it two in a row with an 85-65 decision on January 20, 2018 in Pembroke, North, Carolina. Overall the Lakers are an incredible 10-1 against the Braves at The Loch in the series.
