Clayton State Set to Face First Top Five Opponent Since 2014-15 With Trip to No. 3 Carson-Newman

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (2-1, 0-0 PBC) women's basketball has an extensive history with nationally ranked opponents but will face one of the toughest in recent memory as they travel to No. 3 Carson-Newman (4-0, 0-0 SAC) on Tuesday, November 20. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

All-time the Lakers are 30-42 against nationally ranked foes but are a solid 27-20 since 2007-08. Of those 12 seasons they have defeated at least one ranked team in 10 of them, including earlier this year with a 56-54 win over No. 21 Wingate (11/10).

Digging further, this will be the 13th time the team has faced a top five opponent, going 1-1 vs. No. 1 and 0-5 against No. 2. Their record against No. 3, however, is a perfect 3-0 and includes the program's 69-50 victory over Michigan Tech in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game on March 25, 2011.

The last time the club faced a top five opponent was on November 21, 2014 when they narrowly fell 72-64 to No. 2 Nova Southeastern.

In terms of the all-time series, Clayton State holds a slim 4-3 advantage but the teams have not played since early in the 2008-09 season. The Eagles won the first meeting by a 66-64 score on December 29, 2003 before the Lakers answered with a 76-54 win a year later, almost to the day, on December 30, 2004. Both games were at The Loch.

Carson-Newman delivered the most meaningful win in the early part of the series with a 75-61 win during Clayton State's first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance on March 12, 2005 but fall in the next three meetings. The last of those would be a 68-66 win for the Lakers in the postseason on March 13, 2009. The most recent meeting was a narrow 65-62 CNU victory on December 12, 2009 in Morrow.

Coverage of the game will be available both on live stats and live video on www.ClaytonStateSports.com with a full recap following the contest.
