PEMBROKE, N.C. – A pair of goals were too much to overcome as Clayton State (4-4-2, 1-4-0 PBC) dropped a 2-0 decision at defending Peach Belt Conference Tournament Champion UNC Pembroke (4-3-0, 1-2-0 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 6.
Â
The Lakers would pepper UNCP with five shots over the first 22-plus minutes to their three attempts but it would be the Braves who would find the back of the net. In the 25
th minute Maya Grimes would settle a ball in the box before dishing off to Jillian Robson. The latter then drilled a worm burner that found its way inside the right post for a 1-0 lead at 24:39.
Â
That margin would run to and through the half, holding up until the 69
th minute when UNC Pembroke struck again. It would be that same combination in a very familiar way as Grimes crossed it and Robson beat the keeper to the opposite side to stretch the lead to two with 68:32 gone by. That would essentially close things out as Clayton State managed just two more shots the rest of the way, both in the last four minutes, as the Braves locked down a 2-0 decision.
Â
For UNCP, the offense was Robson and Grimes with a pair of goals and two assists, respectively. Robson took only two shots and connected on both while Brianna de Coteau and Katy Ryan fired off three each and put one apiece on net. Gina Ryan delivered a shutout while posting five saves to push her record to 4-3.
Â
The Lakers offense would consist of an active night from junior defender
Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) as she ripped off eight shots with four on net. No other player had more than one attempt with only two other shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Hannah Richards (Huddersfield, England) played all 90 minutes and made a pair of saves while surrendering just the two goals. She falls to 4-4-2 on the year.
Â
The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, October 10 when they host No. 21 North Georgia. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Laker Field.
