MORROW, Ga. – Junior defender
Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) exploded for five points and Clayton State (5-4-2, 2-4-0 PBC) picked up a much needed Peach Belt Conference win, 4-1, over Francis Marion (5-6-1, 2-4-0 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 13.
Â
Facing a team that they had outscored 15-0 over the past three meetings, the Lakers would make it at least 16 straight goals in the series as they got on the board in the 20
th minute. That would come in the form of a nifty play between junior defender
Janne Brouer (Aarhus, Denmark) and Baquerizo.
Â
Brouer would crash on a ball in the air off the left corner of the net and head it to the opposite corner. Right there to head it in was Baquerizo to add to her team leading goal total, this one coming at the 19:11 mark. That 1-0 margin would then hold up for nearly more 20 minutes.
Â
This time it would be the Patriots that would get on the board and snap that stretch of 16 straight goals allowed to the Lakers. On a loose ball in front of the net Rianna Orello would put a foot on it and find the back right corner of the goal for the equalizer at the 38:35 mark.
Â
Even with just minutes left in the first half that would not be all of the scoring. Awarded a free kick at the top of the box on the left wing, Clayton State would capitalize off the big leg of freshman midfielder
Moa Loftman (Karlstad, Sweden). She lofted a deep ball to the right side of the goal where freshman midfielder
Pia Haug (Ytre Enebakk, Norway) powered it home for a 2-1 lead at 42:11. The teams would then take that one goal margin into the break.
Â
Continuing goals at about 20 minute increments, it would be the 63
rd minute when the score would change again. Once again it would be in favor of the Lakers as Baquerizo delivered a through ball down the middle of the field that found the foot of freshman forward
Isabel Massa (Caracas, Venezuela). After advancing the ball she chipped it over the drawn out keeper and watched it bounce in for a 3-1 lead at the 62:23 mark.
Â
Baquerizo would not be done either as she took advantage of another scoring opportunity, this in the 88
th minute. With just under three minutes to play she broke down the left side and was able to slip a ball past the keeper on the right side and into the corner. With 87:14 gone by, that took the score to the eventual final margin of 4-1.
Â
For FMU, Orello's goal was the lone offense among their nine shots, four on net, and Kylie McElroy led the club with three shots. A pair of those were on frame. In goal Rachael Hennenkamp played all 90 minutes and made 10 saves but allowed four goals to fall to 5-6-1 on the year.
Â
Leading the way for Clayton State was Baquerizo with one of her better offensive games of the season. In just 66 minutes of work she produced a pair of scores and an assist to fuel the offense. She was joined by Haug and Massa in the scoring column and Brouer and Loftman added assists. As a team, they fired off 25 shots, putting 14 on net.
Â
The Lakers return to action on Monday, October 15 when they host No. 13 North Georgia. Scheduled for 5 p.m. at Laker Field, that game will be the makeup game that was rained out on Wednesday, October 10.
