AUGUSTA, Ga. – Junior
Nick Woof (Leighton Buzzard, England) has been named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week following a record breaking performance at the Fifth Annual UNG Fall Invitational earlier this week.
Â
Tying for runner-up honors and earning All-Tournament recognition was impressive but the story was in how he got there. Entering the final day tied for 10th, Woof put his name among the Clayton State greats with a tremendous performance, playing not just the best round of his career but the best in Laker history as he shot a 64 eight-under-par.
Â
Not only did the 64 equal the lowest round on record in program history, tying
Henry Gee from 2014, the eight-under breaks a team record held by two of the best golfers to don the orange and blue.
Â
That round surpasses PGA Tour Pro Will Wilcox's seven-under 65 from the Aflac/Cougar Invitational (10/1/07) as well as the first such performance by former Canadian pro Adam Short. The latter shot a seven-under 65 at the 1999 NCAA Division II National Championships on May 21 of that year.
Â
Beyond those accomplishments, Woof tied the tournament record for a round and finished with a 69-74-64-207 and tied for the highest PBC finisher. The 207 was just two strokes off from tying Wilcox's 54-hole tournament program record of 205 set at the Matlock Invitational in February of 2009.
Â
Woof is one of just eight individuals in program history who have earned the honor, including PGA member Will Wilcox (4), Fredrik Lindblom (2),
Andres Caballero (1),
Ryan Haskell (1),
Henry Gee (1),
Keith Egan (1) and
Alex Vetnar (1). The PBC has given the award since the 2007-08 season and these eight individuals have combined to take home 13 such honors.
Â
Clayton State and Woof return to action on October 22-23 when they head to Carrollton, Georgia for the Matt Dyas Invitational.
