Clayton State Drops 5-1 Decision to North Georgia on Senior Night

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (5-9, 2-7 PBC) could not hold off a second half offensive onslaught as North Georgia (11-3-2, 8-2-0 PBC) posted a 5-1 victory in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Wednesday, October 25.

UNG would dominate the first half with a shot margin of 8-2 but could not connect as the Laker defense held tight. Coming out of a 0-0 deadlock at half, that would change as Renee Vanhorn was awarded a penalty kick at 46:31 and proceeded to bury it to the back right corner for a 1-0 advantage.

More than 17 minutes later she would strike again, this time picking up a loose ball in the box and finding the back of the net for a two goal margin at 63:51. Less than a minute later Brynn Finneran let loose a shot from the top right corner of the box and made it 3-0 with 64:30 gone by. Asa Thorsen added to the lead when she broke through in the box and pounded one off the post to stretch it to a four goal difference just over 10 minutes later.

Clayton State would finally break through less than five minutes later as sophomore defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) got into the offensive end and rifled off a shot from the far right extended corner of the box. That shot would find its way to the back of the net to break up the shutout at 4-1.

North Georgia would benefit from another PK, this time in the 85th minute. Rosie Embley delivered on that opportunity, putting the ball into the back left corner to reach the final margin of 5-1.

VanHorn led the way with a pair of goals for the Nighthawks while Embley, Thorsen and Finneran each notched solo scores. Hannah Goudy started and went 79:43, making two saves and allowing the lone goal to improve to 11-3-2 on the year. Kaitlyn Siberski finished things up with two saves over the final 10:17.

Baquerizo accounted for Clayton State's offense with her seventh goal of the season and was one of seven players that had one shot each. Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) went the distance but allowed five goals against five saves to drop to 4-9 on the season.

The Lakers close out the regular season when they travel to No. 17 Flagler on Saturday, October 28. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in St. Augustine, Florida.
