Lakers Close Out 2017 With 3-0 Loss at No. 17 Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Clayton State (5-10, 2-8 PBC) could not withstand two late first half scores as No. 17 Flagler (14-1-12, 7-1-2 PBC) notched a 3-0 victory in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 28.

The Lakers would put together an impressive defensive effort over the first 40 minutes as they kept it deadlocked at 0-0 despite being outshot 6-0. That would change in short order, however, in the 41st minute as the Saints leading scorer, Charlene Nowotny, lined up for a free kick from 24 yards out on the right side. From there she lofted the ball over the keeper to the back left corner for a 1-0 lead at 40:33.

Less than 20 seconds later Flagler drove down the center of the field and worked their way midway into the box. Nowotny then dished to Addie Foster who found Maria Castorino-Mujica just off of the left post. She deked the keeper before putting the ball to the back right corner to make it 2-0 advantage with 30:52 gone by. The teams would then take that margin to the break.

Following that brief lapse, the Clayton State defense would be back on beam over the first 28 minutes of the second half as they held the Saints scoreless during that time. It would not last though as Fio Fustagno crossed a ball into the box in the 74th minute that found the foot of Annie Habeeb. She then powered it home for a 3-0 advantage at the 73:19 mark.

The Lakers would fend off a penalty kick five minutes later but could not get their offense going over the final 12 minutes. Flagler would then go on to close out the 3-0 victory.

Nowotny led the Saints with a goal and an assist while Castorino-Mujica and Habeeb each had solo scores. Fustagno rounded out the offense with an assist. In net, Sarah-Lisa Dubel faced just three shots and did not have to make a save as she played all 90 minutes to move to 13-1-2.

Clayton State managed just three shots on the day, those coming from sophomore defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador), sophomore midfielders Jane McKevitt (Thurles, Ireland) and Andrea Rodriguez (Monterrey, Mexico). Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) closed out her career by going the distance and making two saves against three goals allowed. She finishes the season at 4-10.

With the loss, the Lakers close out the 2017 season with a 5-10 overall record and 2-8 mark in league play.
