Clayton State Drops 3-0 Decision in Downpour at UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Playing in sideways rain for the entire game, Clayton State (4-2, 1-1 PBC) could not overcome a three-goal deficit as UNC Pembroke (3-2, 1-0 PBC) earned a 3-0 victory in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Wednesday, September 21.

It wouldn't take long for the Braves to get on the board as Carly Rochelle took a pass from Carolina Sanchez just 45 seconds in. She then buried that in the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage. Despite a Laker red card midway through the first half that left them down a player, that one goal margin would remain until halftime.

Coming out of the break, however, UNCP would strike again, this time as Kristina Stevenson drilled a shot from 23 yards out for a 2-0 lead at 48:11. That margin would grow to three as Rochelle notched her second goal of the game, going one-on-one with the keeper at 59:58.

Rochelle led UNC Pembroke with a pair of goals while Stevenson had the only other score on the day. Sanchez posted the lone assist and Gina Ryan went the distance in goal. The latter recorded six saves to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Senior midfielder Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) led Clayton State with five shots, one on goal, while freshman defender Janne Brouer (Aarhus, Denmark) finished with four shots and one on net. Senior forward Danielle Fletcher (McDonough, Ga.) added a pair of shots and one shot on goal. In net, freshman midfielder Jane McKevitt (Thurles, Ireland) played all 90 minutes, making eight saves and allowing three goals to fall to 0-1 on the year.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Georgia College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Milledgeville, Georgia.

NOTES
Jane McKevitt made her first career appearance in goal for the Lakers.
