MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Following their first Peach Belt Conference loss, Clayton State (5-2-0, 2-1-0 PBC) bounced back in strong fashion with a 2-1 victory at Georgia College (3-2-1, 1-2-0 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 24.
Both teams came out firing, with the Lakers finding their way onto the scoreboard first. Freshman defender
Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) found graduate midfielder
Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) at the 5:07 mark to put Clayton State up 1-0.
The score wouldn't stay that way for long, however, as GC's Maddie Stephen converted off a pass from Sol Baldassini just 18 seconds later. That deadlocked the game at 1-1, a score that would hold until halftime and deep into the second half.
It would take until the 84
th minute before the scoreboard would change again. With just over 83 minutes gone by, freshman midfielder
Jane McKevitt (Thurles, Ireland) sent a ball through the Bobcat defense directly in front of the goal. Unfortunately for GC, that ball was collected by Marti Bartis who proceeded to power home the eventual game winner At 83:16 and put the defense in a position to lock down the 2-1 victory.
Marti Bartis would lead the way for the Lakers with a pair of scores, with the second being the 30
th of her career, while Baquerizo and McKevitt each had an assist. In net, redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) played all 90 minutes in net, making two saves and allowing the one goal to move to 5-1 on the season.
Stephen produced the one goal to lead the Bobcats while Baldassini added an assist. In goal, Ashlee Graham went the distance but gave up both goals against four saves to suffer her first loss of the season and fall to 3-1.
The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, September 28 when they host Montevallo. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at Laker Field.
NOTES
With the two goals today, Marti Bartis now has 30 career goals which ranks fourth all-time in program history … she trails Olaitan Yusuf (83, 2004-07), Nkiru Okosieme (64, 2001-04) and Natalia Valentine (32, 2009-12) on the list … the 2-1 decision is also the Lakers fifth such score through the first seven games of the year … all but one of those have been victories.
