MORROW, Ga. – For the second straight year, Clayton State All-American
Brandon Robinson (Lake Wales, Fla.) has led his team to the Super 16 of The Basketball Tournament, a $2 million winner take all tournament.
Â
Robinson played for the Lakers from 2009-11 and was a two-time All-Region selection and
2010-11 Division II Bulletin All-American. Over the course of his career he averaged 17.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals and nearly a block a game. He also knocked down 118 threes in 58 games and starts.
Â
Last season Robinson's team advanced to Chicago, Illinois for what was then the Super 17 as part of a 97-team field before falling to eventual champion Overseas Elite on ESPNU. This year he's playing for Trained To Go and has already been instrumental in earning that second trip.
Â
Competing in Charlotte, North Carolina in the South Region of the 64-team field, he put up 15 points, five steals and four boards in an 87-82 victory over PrimeTimePlayers in an opening round game. That squad had, if not familiar faces, familiar opponents as it consisted mostly of former Southeast Region players.
Â
They included players from Wingate (Sean Barnette), UNC Pembroke (Jonathan Hart), Queens (Tavaron Raymon – Coach), Catawba (Donald Rutherford), Mars Hill (Danny Sanders), Limestone (Terell Smith) and Erskine (Victor Street, Jr.).
Â
Entering the field as a No. 8 seed in the region, Trained To Go would face top-seeded Bluff City Blues in the second round. Made up mostly of former University of Memphis players, and backed by 14-year National Basketball Association veteran Penny Hardaway, BCB was coming off a 97-86 victory over OPI, a team that featured six former players from Armstrong State.
Â
As one would expect, it would be a challenge the entire way as BCB led 81-77 with 14.7 seconds left on the clock. On a team with eight-year NBA veteran Damien Wilkins and six other Division I players, it would be Robinson who led the comeback, however.
Â
He drained a straight away three-pointer to cut it to one and TTG got the ball back trailing 82-80 after sending the top seed to the line. With just under 10 seconds left, Robinson worked his way to the corner and nailed the game-winning triple to lock up an 83-82 upset victory. On the day he finished with a game-high 21 points, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Â
Trained To Go now advances to the Super 16 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they will face No. 5 seed TMD. That team features an almost entirely DI roster from schools such as Ole Miss, Wisconsin, Memphis, Colorado State and Arkansas.
Â
They got there having slipped past No. 12 Southern Hospitality 94-93 in the first round before shellacking No. 4 Team BDB 112-91. The latter was led by former Kansas star Josh Selby and seven other major DI players.
Â
That game will take place on either Thursday, July 21 or Friday, July 22 at Philadelphia University and will be aired on either ESPN2 or ESPN3. Both the Midwest (Chicago, Ill.) and Northeast (Philadelphia, Pa.) regions will take place on July 16-17 to round out the Super 16 field.
Â
The semifinals will take place on Saturday, July 30 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the winners advancing to the $2 million championship game on Tuesday August 2. All three games will be televised live on ESPN with the championship airing at 9 p.m.
