DAHLONEGA, Ga. – With a chance to qualify for the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Championships, Clayton State (5-11, 2-7 PBC) mustered just one point against North Georgia (14-6, 4-4 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Sunday, April 9.
UNG would take the early lead with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles before senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) notched an impressive 8-1 decision at the No. 1 spot. Unfortunately, that would be the lone highlight on the day for the Lakers.
The Nighthawks would take No. 2 doubles by an 8-3 score over juniors
Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) and
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) before sweeping all six singles matches to reach the final 8-1 margin.
Pavel would put up the biggest fight in singles action as she battled Kathrin Waidner at No. 1 before falling 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. She would be joined by Mendes, who after winning the opening set 6-1 at No. 4, would fall 6-3 in the second frame and just barely miss at 10-8 in the tie-breaker.
With the loss, Clayton State will almost certainly remain behind UNG in the standings, which moves up to seventh. Instead they will set their sights on jumping over Augusta (4-5 PBC) and Young Harris (3-5 PBC) over their final three matches.
The Lakers get a chance to improve their standing tomorrow, Sunday, April 10 as they travel to Young Harris. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Young Harris, Georgia.
