MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Clayton State (4-10, 2-6 PBC) took a major step towards qualifying for the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Tournament as they downed Montevallo (11-7, 1-7 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Saturday, April 2.

Following an 8-3 loss at No. 2, doubles, the Lakers would take the next two for a 2-1 advantage. Senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) picked up the first of those with an 8-5 victory at the No. 1 position before sophomore
Alina Ageichik (Minsk, Republic of Belarus) and junior
Carolina Monterrubio (Mexico City, Mexico) posted a 9-7 marathon decision at No. 3.

They would extend that lead to 3-1 in singles play as Ageichik delivered a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Julia Berg before the Falcons responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 to even the match. However, junior
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) spearheaded the first of two straight victories as she picked up a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 3. Junior
Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) then put an end to any comeback hopes with a 7-6, 6-4 decision at No. 4. Monterrubio then closed it out with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 to reach the final margin.

With the win, Clayton State moves ahead of UM and now holds the season tiebreaker. Currently they sit in 10
th place but are nearly dead even with North Georgia (2-4) and Young Harris (2-5). Over the final weeks, they will play both of those squads and control their own destiny.

The Lakers return home on Monday, April 4 when they host Erskine in a rescheduled match. Originally scheduled for February 13, first serve is set for 2 p.m. in Morrow, Georgia.
