MORROW, Ga. – Taking on the last of 10 nationally ranked opponents, Clayton State (5-14, 2-10 PBC) could not overcome No. 50 USC Aiken (14-7, 6-6 PBC) as they fell 8-1 in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Sunday, April 17.
Â
The Pacers would take an early 2-0 lead with identical 8-2 victories at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles before juniors
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) and
Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) pulled out an 8-4 decision over Kayla Calvert and Victoria Giannacini at No. 2.
Â
That would be the Lakers last victory of the season, however, as USCA proved to be too much in singles play. With wins at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0), No. 6 (6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 (6-1, 6-4), they would lock up the match win before completing the singles sweep with three more victories.
Â
Junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) came the closest at No. 2, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Olivera Veskovac, while senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) fell 7-6, 6-1 to No. 29 Nadine Tusiama at the No. 1 position.
Â
The Lakers close out the 2016 season with a 5-14 overall record and a total of 10 of those matches against nationally ranked opponents.
Â
NOTE
Senior
Raluca Pavel wrapped up the final match of her career as Clayton State's lone senior.
