Defending NAIA National Champion No. 1 Auburn-Montgomery Too Much For Clayton State; Lakers Fall 9-0

Boxscore

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Taking on the defending NAIA National Champion and current No. 1 Auburn-Montgomery (7-1, 5-0 SSAC), and short-handed at that, Clayton State (2-5, 1-3 PBC) could not entertain an upset as AUM posted a 9-0 victory in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Friday, March 4.

Already playing without one of their top players, the Lakers found themselves down 2-0 before the match even started, with forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The Warhawks would then notch an 8-1 decision at No. 2 doubles and an 8-3 win at No. 1.

In singles play, Clayton State would be up against four nationally ranked players, including No. 11 Paula Diaz. Junior Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) would give her the toughest time at No. 2 in a 6-3, 6-3 decision and senior Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) challenged No. 20 Kelly Southwood before falling 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1.

The Lakers are back in action for their home opener as they play host to Francis Marion on Sunday, March 6. First serve is set for 10 a.m. Morrow, Georgia.
