BoxscoreATLANTA, Ga. – Clayton State (1-2, 0-1 PBC) earned its first victory of the season as they left no doubt against Clark Atlanta (0-3, 0-1 SIAC) as they posted a 9-0 victory in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Sunday, February 14.
Even before the first serve the Lakers were up 2-0 as CAU fielded only five players, leading to forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Once the teams took to the court, senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) took care of business at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 victory.
The junior tandem of
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) and junior
Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) would make it 4-0 but would face a challenge at No. 2 doubles. The Panthers' Vonnick Boyogueno and DiAndrea Galloway forced the match to a tiebreak and led 6-4 but Mendes and Drozdova battled back to take the next four points to claim a 9-8 decision.
In singles action, sophomore
Alina Ageichik (Minsk, Republic of Belarus) put the match away with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory over Khadija Elder at No. 5. From there, the teams adjusted the remaining singles matches to an eight-point pro set style.
Mets would earn an 8-2 victory over Boyogueno at No. 2 and Mendes soon followed with an 8-3 decision over Avern Gumbs at the four spot. Drozdova (8-4) and Pavel (8-4) then completed the sweep at the No. 3 and No. 1 spots, respectively.
Clayton State is now
6-0 all-time against Clark Atlanta dating back to the first meeting on March 21, 2009. This is the fifth time in the series that they have notched a sweep.
The Lakers are now off for a week until facing No. 13 Georgia College on Sunday, February 21. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Milledgeville, Ga.
