AUGUSTA, Ga. – Taking on one of the top teams in the country on their home court, Clayton State (0-2, 0-1 PBC) was unable to withstand the onslaught of No. 36 Augusta (4-0, 1-0 PBC) as they dropped a 7-2 decision in an NCAA Division II women's tennis match on Thursday, February 11.
The Jaguars would jump out to an early lead as Maria Nadal and Gisela Font posted an 8-4 decision over sophomore
Alina Ageichik (Minsk, Republic of Belarus) and junior
Carolina Monterrubio (Mexico City, Mexico) at No. 3 doubles.
The junior pairing of
Maria Mendes (Sau Paulo, Brazil) and
Darina Drozdova (St. Petersburg, Russia) would not fair much better at No. 2 as Monica Gonzalez and Amelia Pinoargote claimed an 8-3 decision for a 2-0 lead. Senior
Raluca Pavel (Bacau, Romania) and junior
Kristiin Mets (Kuressaare, Estonia) put up a strong fight at No. 1 but could not overtake the tandem of Brooke Durden and Maria C. Pimental, falling 9-7.
Entering singles trailing 3-0, the Lakers would drop the first three matches as Mendes (6-2, 6-1), Ageichik (6-1, 6-4) and Drozdova (6-3, 6-2) fell at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 3, respectively. They would bounce back at the top two spots, however, as Mets earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2. Following a 6-3, 7-6 decision at No. 6 by Monterrubio, Pavel would polish off a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 victory at No. 1.
The Lakers see their home court for the first time this season when they host Erskine on Saturday, February 13. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
