Clayton State Welcomes Impressive Field For 2016 Heritage Bank Classic

MORROW, Ga. – No. 24 Clayton State (6-1, 0-0 PBC) hosts the Heritage Bank Classic for the 16th consecutive year as they welcome Armstrong State (3-4, 0-0 PBC), Chowan (6-0, 0-0 CIAA) and Shaw (2-4, 0-0 CIAA) to the 2016 field.

The tournament will run from December 2-3 with Shaw and Armstrong getting things started at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The Lakers will follow as they take on an undefeated Chowan squad to cap Day 1 at 5:30 p.m. The second day will feature Chowan against Armstrong and Shaw vs. Clayton State.

The latter will be a rematch of the 2011 NCAA Division II National Semifinal during the Lakers national championship year.

Clayton State Series History Against The Field
Armstrong State: 26-11
Chowan: 4-1
Shaw: 3-0

The Lakers have faced the field a total of 45 times and are a combined 33-12. While they will not face Armstrong State in the tournament, they are 26-11 all-time since the first meeting on December 3, 1995. They have won nine of the last 10 meetings.

Against teams they will face, Clayton State is 4-1 against Chowan since first meeting on November 20, 2010. That 89-48 victory was the first of three straight with the lone Hawks victory coming in the Heritage Bank Classic, 89-73, on December 6, 2014.

They are a perfect 3-0 vs. Shaw, including one of the biggest games in program history. After picking up an 82-67 victory in the first meeting on December 15, 2006, the teams did not meet again until March 23, 2011 – the NCAA Division II National Semifinals.

The Lakers would pick up a 63-46 victory to advance to their first national championship game before claiming the only women's basketball national title by a Southeast Region team two days later, defeating Michigan Tech 69-50.
