Clayton State Drops Heartbreaking 3-2 Overtime Decision at Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – In a battle of teams trying to fight their way into the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Tournament, Clayton State (2-10-0, 0-5-0 PBC) and Georgia Southwestern (2-8-1, 1-4-0 PBC) went toe-to-toe before a late rally gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 overtime victory in an NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Wednesday, October 12.

Junior forward Kevin Otokore (Paris, France) got the Lakers on the board first as he snared a pass from freshman midfielder Will Summerfield (Bedford, England) and drilled into the top right of the net at the 10:30 mark. It would remain a 1-0 advantage through the rest of the first half and over the first 13 minutes of the second.

At that point, it was Otokore that factored into the scoring yet again as he found graduate forward Waynee Hyman (Warwick, N.Y.) on the left side. The 15-time track & field All-American then netted the first goal of his career to stretch to a 2-0 margin at 58:20.

Facing the almost certain extinguishing of their postseason hopes, the Hurricanes battled back over the final 12 minutes. With 78:22 gone by, Brennan Bauschka found Chase Cantrell in front of the net, putting him in prime position to notch his first score of the season and cut the deficit to one.

Time would continue to wind down but not fast enough for the Lakers as GSW leading scorer Silvio Polly added to his total, delivering the equalizer off a pass from Isaac Avila at the very end of the 86th minute. That score would then send both clubs into overtime four minutes later.

In the extra session, it would be all Georgia Southwestern as they ripped off four shots to Clayton State's one. On the final one, it would be a near carbon copy of the game-tying goal as Avila found Polly just off the right corner of the net. From there, he drove home his eighth goal of the season, this one closing out a 3-2 overtime, come-from-behind victory.

Otokore led the way offensively as he finished with a goal and assist while Summerfield picked up his second assist of the season. In net, freshman goalkeeper Leuri Fraire (Dalton, Ga.) played all 96:45 and made 10 saves against three goals allowed to fall to 2-6 on the year.

Polly finished with a pair of scores to pace Georgia Southwestern while Cantrell had the clubs only other score. Avila came away with two assists and Bauschka rounded out the offense with assist on the day. Joshua Swift went the distance in goal, making seven saves while allowing two goals. He improves to 2-8-1 on the year.

The Lakers step out of conference one final time as they head to No. 13 Limestone (9-1, 6-0 CC) on Saturday, October 15. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Gaffney, South Carolina.

NOTES
The game marked just the third time that the teams had gone to overtime in the series' 11 meetings … the Lakers won both of those, delivering a 3-2 single overtime win in the first meeting on October 11, 2006 and a 1-0 decision on October 18, 2008 … both games were at Laker Field in Morrow, Georgia … with 10 saves on the night, it marked the second consecutive game that Fraire had reached double digits in that category … he recorded a career-high 12 saves in his last outing against No. 6 Wingate.
