Marti Bartis Notches Goal and Two Assists As Clayton State Drills Francis Marion 4-0

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (6-2-1, 2-1-1 PBC) came out ready to play and simply overpowered Francis Marion (0-10, 0-5 PBC) as they delivered a convincing 4-0 victory in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 1.

The Lakers would score early and often as junior forward Renee Gillespie (Kansas City, Kansas) took a pass from freshman defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and buried it in the net at the 7:17 mark for a 1-0 lead.

Just over three minutes later, it would be Baquerizo that would be on the receiving end as she connected off a pass from senior midfielder Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) at the 10:41 mark. That score would remain that way until the 27:45 mark when Marti Bartis set up junior defender Alexis Gipson (Crandall, Texas) for her first career goal.

That 3-0 margin, fueled by an 18-1 difference in shots, would carry through to the half and beyond. In the second half, it would be Marti Bartis that would do the damage once again, this time in the 56th minute as she broke away down the left side and slammed the ball into the netting for a 4-0 lead at 57:57.

The Lakers would continue their offensive charge, finishing with 15 more shots in the second half, before the defense finished things off for the four goal victory. Overall, they would outshoot FMU by an incredible 33-2 margin as they utilized as good offense to aid the defense.

Marti Bartis dominated the offense with four points on a goal and two assists to lead Clayton State. That score was also the 32nd of her career, tying her for the third most in program history. She was joined in the scoring column by Gillespie and Baquerizo while the latter also added an assist.

In goal, redshirt-junior goalkeeper Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) went the distance, making one save to secure the shutout and improve to 6-1-1.

The Patriots managed just two shots on the day, with Kelly Anthony earning one and putting it on goal while Haley Bigler had the other shot. In goal, Casey Murakami made 10 saves but allowed all four goals to suffer the loss and drop to 0-9.

The Lakers are back in action on Wednesday, October 5 when they travel to NCAA Division II National Runner-Up No. 13 Columbus State (6-2, 2-1 PBC). Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Columbus, Georgia.
