Clayton State Falls 6-0 at No. 9 Columbus State in Peach Belt Battle

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Clayton State (6-3-1, 3-2-1 PBC) could not overcome an offensive barrage as they dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 9 Columbus State (8-2-0, 4-1-0 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Wednesday, October 5.

The Lakers defense was equal to the task through the first 14-plus minutes before a busted play left one of the top offensive players in the Peach Belt with a one-on-one inside the box. Nicole Corcione collected the ball and proceeded to loft it several feet over the head of the keeper before it bounced into the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead at 14:45.

Clayton State would recover defensively over the next 12 minutes before Hugrun Elvarsdottir capitalized on a pass from Taylor Marks, driving the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 at 27:33. The defense would then hold them scoreless the rest of the half but the Lakers would go the first 45 minutes without recording a shot.

The second half would see much of the same as the Cougars netted a free kick right at the top of the box just 1:53 in. Cassandra Wade would put a perfectly placed ball over the five person wall that cleared the keeper and settled midway up the net to stretch to a 3-0 lead.

Less than 10 minutes later Columbus would strike again as Corcione setup a fourth goal, this one by Mandy Janowitz at 55:27. Corcione dribbled in and delivered a ball to the right side that Janowitz put past the keeper to make it 4-0. That margin would stretch to five just over three minutes later when Tehgan Anguilm powered a ball from 45 yards out and watched it bounce in for her first career goal at 58:30.

At the 60:43 mark, the Cougars' Wade and Janowitz hooked up with the latter banging one off of the keeper that would find its way in for the sixth goal of the night. That would be the extent of the Columbus offense but the damage would be done as they would go on to close out the 6-0 victory.

On the night, the Lakers would record just four shots with senior forward Iciar Duran (Madrid, Spain) notching the first in the 64th minute, which would be the only one on goal. Joining her with an attempt apiece were graduate midfielder Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain), sophomore midfielder Marie Durr (Stockbridge, Ga.) and senior midfielder Claudia Granja (Barcelona, Spain).

In net, redshirt-junior goalkeeper Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) played all 90 minutes, allowing all six goals against two saves to drop to 6-2-1.

For Columbus, Janowitz finished with a pair of goals and Wade and Corcione each had a goal and assist. Anguilm and Elvarsdottir would round out the scoring with one each. Maylyn Parsons started and played the first 63 minutes, making no saves and allowing no goals while Paige Betsill played the last 27 minutes and made a pair of saves.

Next up, the Lakers continue a two-game road trip as they head to Georgia Southwestern (3-6, 0-4 PBC) on Wednesday, October 12. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Americus, Georgia as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
