MORROW, Ga. – Off to an 11-1 start that is beginning to garner national attention, Clayton State (11-1, 5-0 PBC) looks to remain unbeaten in Peach Belt Conference play as they head to North Georgia (11-3, 3-2 PBC) for a battle of 11-win teams in the league's West Division on Saturday, January 9.
The Nighthawks, who won 10 of their first 11 games, have had a tougher time of it with an all PBC schedule in the New Year. Since turning the page on the calendar they just 1-2 with a 66-58 loss to Georgia College (1/2) and a 76-70 defeat at the hands of Augusta (1/7). Their lone victory during that stretch was a 59-56 decision against rival Young Harris (1/4).
Clayton State heads to Dahlonega, Georgia after receiving 25 votes in the
USA Today Sports/WBCA Division II Coaches Poll on January 5. It is their first time appearing in the poll since they received 63 votes in the November 25, 2014 rankings.
That recognition is for good reason as they have opened up at 11-1 overall with their lone loss coming to Lubbock Christian, a team that is undefeated at 12-0 and currently holds down the No. 5 spot in the nation. Most recently they took down Armstrong State 79-70 to extend to an eight-game winning streak.
Nationally, the Lakers rank second in the country in turnovers forced (26.2), sixth in offensive rebounds (18.0), seventh in steals per game (13.0) and have the 16
th best winning percentage at .917.
