MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (7-5, 2-3 PBC) looks to rebound from a tough overtime loss as they head to North Georgia (4-10, 2-3 PBC) for a crucial Peach Belt Conference game on Saturday, January 9. Both teams are among three squads that are 2-3 in the league's West Division and are just one game behind 3-2 Montevallo for fourth in the division. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in Dahlonega, Georgia following the conclusion of the women's game.
Despite sporting a 4-10 overall mark, UNG has a tall and athletic roster that has kept them in a number of games, particularly of late. They have lost three of their last four, but by just a combined 2.3 points. They dropped a 77-73 decision to Armstrong State (12/19) to close 2015 before beating Georgia College (1/2) 78-67 to open the New Year. Since then they've fallen 84-82 to Young Harris (1/4) and Augusta (1/7), 86-85, with both of those games coming at home.
In some ways it has been a similar tale for the Lakers, who in their last four losses have averaged a margin of only 3.5 points, including a pair of overtime defeats. Those games have included a 78-75 loss to Lane (12/15), 78-77 overtime decision to Lander (12/17), a 79-71 loss at Young Harris (1/2) and narrow 91-89 overtime defeat at the hands of Armstrong State (1/6) in their last outing.
During that stretch they have also earned victories over Francis Marion (12/19), 81-70, and defending PBC Champion and NCAA Division II Sweet 16 participant Montevallo (1/4), the latter by a 72-67 score. A talented roster, however, has Clayton State in position to be a contender in the PBC, thanks to some stout defensive numbers.
Nationally, they rank seventh overall in field goal percentage defense (.387), 14
th in blocked shots per game (5.1) and 23
rd in total blocks (61). The Lakers also lead the PBC in field goal percentage defense and are second in blocks per game.
