MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (10-1, 4-0 PBC) continued their tremendous start as they fought off a feisty Montevallo (4-7, 1-3 PBC) to claim a 65-51 victory in an NCAA Division II women's basketball game on Monday, January 4.

Senior center DaQuenna Moore (Plantersville, Ga.) delivered a top notch performance with 13 points and 13 rebounds, five of which were offensive, while redshirt-junior center Andrea Benford (Madison, Ga.) had 10 points, five boards, three assists and three steals in 22 minutes.

Senior guard Kayla Pryce (Melbourne, Fla.) finished with 10 points, three assists and a pair of steals and senior guard Kenisha Jones-Barrett (Winter Haven, Fla.) added nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Redshirt-senior forward Jessica Covington (Tifton, Ga.) and redshirt-junior guard Tierra Johnson (Edison, N.J.) each chipped in with seven points to round out the top performers.

Clayton State would take a 10-4 lead by the 5:29 mark of the first period before the Falcons put together a 13-4 run over the next 6:15 to take a 17-14 advantage. Pryce would then knot the score at 17-17 with a three at 8:01 of the second, bringing about the first of three ties and a pair of lead changes that left UM with a 26-23 lead by the 4:42 mark. From there, the Lakers used a 10-0 run, fueled by six points from Benford, to head to the half with a 33-26 advantage.

Five quick points at the start of the third would close the gap to 33-31 before the Lakers scraped together eight straight points to make it a 41-31 margin by the 4:03 mark. They would see that lead cut to 46-40 before closing the third with a 49-40 courtesy of a last second three from Moore.

That triple would spark a 7-0 stretch that extended the lead to 53-40 by 9:01 of the fourth. A feisty Montevallo squad would cut it to 53-45 just under four minutes later but it would not be enough as the Lakers rebounded with a 10-5 burst to make it 63-50 with 2:04 to play. From there they would go on to close out the 65-51victory and move to 10-1 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in PBC play.

Jacquelyn Thompson led UM with a game-high 17 points along with five rebounds while Morgan Smith had 12 points and four rebounds. Jazmine Stubblefield chipped in with a game-best five assists in 22 minutes to close out their top performers.

The Lakers conclude their mini two-game homestand when they host Armstrong State on Wednesday, January 6. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at The Loch.
