MORROW, Ga. – Winners of 13 straight, No. 13/22 Clayton State (16-1, 10-0 PBC) heads to Americus, Georgia for Peach Belt Conference action against Georgia Southwestern (8-9, 2-8 PBC). Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27. In a twist of the schedule, it is the Lakers first road midweek game all season.
On paper, it is a battle of either end of the league standings but on the court, looks may be deceiving. GSW opened the season winning their first five games and six of their first seven before losing seven of their next eight, all in PBC play.
All but one of those games have seen the Hurricanes stay within 11 points and dropped a 62-60 overtime decision to a strong Georgia College (1/4) program. Most recently they snapped a three-game skid with a 63-59 victory at UNC Pembroke.
Clayton State has been on a roll since late November, winning 13 straight games and all 10 league meetings. The latter has them solidly in first place in the PBC by three games in the loss column, ahead of four teams that are 7-3 in Columbus State, Francis Marion, Augusta and Lander. They also have head-to-head wins in their only meetings with FMU and Lander from that group.
This past week, the Lakers moved up to a tie for No. 13 in the nation in the D2SIDA Media Poll and broke into the
USA Today Sports Coaches Poll at No. 22. This was before they battled through two time changes and a date change for their most recent game. That contest, a home date against a tough North Georgia (1/24) squad, would see them pull out a hard-fought 68-62 victory to improve to 16-1.
