Knight’s Double-Double Powers Clayton State Past Saint Leo 76-63

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Clayton State (3-0, 0-0 PBC) rode three double-figure performances on their way to a 76-63 victory at Saint Leo (5-2, 0-0 SSC) in an NCAA Division II men's basketball game on Sunday, November 29.

Senior forward Takija Knight (Crawfordville, Fla.) delivered his first double-double of the season with 19 points, 15 rebounds, six of them offensive, and added two blocks and three steals. He was joined by sophomore guard Nathan Powell (Orlando, Fla.) with 13 points, six boards, four assists and three steals.

Senior guard Saiquan Terry (Manchester, Ga.) finished with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting and junior guard Maurice White (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in with nine points to round out the top performers.

The teams would be separated by no more than five points over the first 7:18 as the Lions took a 15-10 advantage before a 7-0 run over the next 1:34 by Clayton State then flipped the script and made it 17-15. The teams then deadlocked three times, the last at 21-21 with 7:31 left in the half.

It wouldn't stay that way for long as Knight fueled a 10-1 run with seven points on a pair of jumpers and a three to give the Lakers a 31-22 advantage at the 4:15 mark. Saint Leo would put together a mini 4-0 run to close to within five points but Terry would nail his third three of the half at 1:58 for a 34-26 advantage, a margin they would take into the break.

It would get no better for the Lions over the first five minutes of the second half as Clayton State exploded for a 17-7 run to extend their lead to 51-33 by the 14:59 mark. During that run Powell would produce seven points while Knight had six.

From there, the onslaught would continue and Saint Leo would get no closer than 15 points until just over a minute remained. Along the way, they would trail by as much as 22 before the Lakers closed out the 76-63 victory to remain undefeated.

Caleb Stewart was the lone double-figure scorer for Saint Leo with 10 points while Lawrence Watt had eight points and six boards. Tyreece Pierce chipped in with six points and seven rebounds and Trail Pierce added eight points. Carter Belling rounded out the Lions top performers with seven points and four rebounds.

The Lakers continue a three-game road trip when they travel to Carson-Newman on Wednesday, December 2. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn.
