PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Clayton State women's soccer Lakers extended its win streak to seven games while earning its third straight shutout with a 3-0 decision on Saturday over UNC Pembroke in a key Peach Belt Conference encounter. Both teams entered the match-up with 2-0 PBC records, but the Lakers came away remaining unbeaten.
Clayton State got all of its scoring in the second half with the PBC's leading scorer Maria Marti Bartis scoring her 10th goal of the season and the game-winning score two and a half minutes into the second half on a pass from Lucy Cunningham. Six minutes later, Cunningham scored her eighth goal of the season from 16 yards away. Rachael Schmidt added the contest's final score for the Lakers in the 79th minute on an unassisted goal.
Clayton State improves its overall record to 8-1 (3-0, PBC) while Pembroke slips to 5-2-1 (2-1, PBC). Charlotte McCormack picked up the shutout and her fifth of the season. The Lakers held a 20-8 shot advantage and played most of the second half down a player when Jencilia Villaverde received a red card in the 58th minute.
The Lakers are back in action Wednesday when PBC rival Montevallo (0-4, 0-2) comes to town. The match-up is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start following the men's contest that begins at 5 p.m.
