Lakers Shutout Visiting Queens

MORROW, Ga. – A scoring frenzy to open the second half against visiting Queens University Monday night was the difference for Clayton State as the Laker women's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout win over the Royals.  Clayton State (4-1) picked up its third win in a row and second shutout of the season for Lakers' goalkeeper Charlotte McCormack.

"It was a delight to get the victory and the shutout," said Lakers head coach Gareth O'Sullivan.

Both teams played relatively even in the first half.  A light rain that began at halftime did not dampen the Laker offense that captured the lead 1:46 into the second half when Denisha Paskell took the feed from Rachael Schmidt and scored the eventual game-winning goal.

Less than 10 minutes later (55:23), Jencilia Villaverde scored on a double-assist from teammates Melissa Hetherington and Lucy Cunningham.  Almost three minutes later (58:37), Cunningham scored an insurance goal on a pass from Paskell.

On the night, Clayton State out-shot Queens (1-4) 22-7 with 14 shots coming in the wet second half.  McCormack made five saves while her counterpart Tori Danchak made eight saves.

The Lakers return to action Wednesday when they open their Peach Belt Conference title defense against visiting Young Harris College.  The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Laker Field.
