Montevallo, AL – The Clayton State women's basketball team notched its seventh straight win Saturday afternoon with a convincing 66-51 victory over Montevallo at Trustmark Arena in Montevallo, AL.
After trailing by a slim margin in the first eight minutes of the contest, the Lakers took their first lead of the game at the 11:22 mark on a 3-pointer by guard Tiayra Green. The basket was one of a trio of 3-pointers by Green and also three of her game-high 17 points in the contest.
Clayton State pushed its lead to 11 points, 28-17, with 1:17 remaining in the period on a basket in the paint by sophomore center Andrea Benford. After a Montevallo 3-pointer by guard Jacquelyn Thompson, Benford gave the squad a 10-point advantage, 30-20, in the closing seconds of the half.
In the second half, the Lakers opened the period with an 11-0 run and never looked back. Benford opened the stretch with four straight points, followed by a jumper by Green. Forward Kiana Morton capped the run with a 3-pointer and then a basket at the 15:08 mark, giving Clayton State a 40-21 lead.
The Lakers led by double digits for the remainder of the contest.
With the win, Clayton State improves to 15-5 overall and 10-3 in the Peach Belt, while Montevallo drops to 6-14 and 3-10 in the league. The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Georgia College in a 5:30 p.m. game at the Athletics Center.
Green's team-leading 17 points came on 6-of-13 shooting, and she also grabbed six rebounds. Benford finished with 14 points and eight boards, while Jackson posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Guard Bena Hanyard chipped in 11 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
For Montevallo, forward Taylor Beverly finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Thompson also scored 14 points.
The Clayton State defense was once again impressive, holding the Falcons to 31 percent (17-of-55) shooting for the game. The Lakers hit 46 percent (27-of-59) from the floor. Clayton State held a 46-37 edge on the boards and committed 19 turnovers compared to 20 for Montevallo.
The Lakers controlled the paint outscoring the Falcons 29-6 inside and held a 20-9 edge in scoring off turnovers.
