Morrow, GA – The Clayton State women's basketball team captured its eight win in a row Saturday afternoon with an 83-66 victory over Montevallo at the Athletics Center.
Leading 50-44 with 12:06 remaining in the second half, the Lakers went on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to take control of the game. Laker center Andrea Benford provided the offensive spark during the stretch, scoring seven points during the run. She capped the stretch with a basket at the 6:56 mark to give the Lakers a 15-point advantage, 63-48.
Clayton State led by double digits for the remainder of the contest and pushed its lead to 18 points, 80-62, on a basket by forward Shacamra Jackson in the paint after a nice pass from Benford at the top of the key.
After the game went back and forth in the first 10 minutes of the contest, Clayton State took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by guard Tiayra Green with 9:31 remaining in the first half. The Lakers extended their lead to 36-26, with 57 seconds left until intermission before Montevallo forward Taylor Beverly hit a free throw to cut the lead to nine points, 36-27 at halftime.
With the win, Clayton State improves to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in the Peach Belt Conference, while the Falcons drop to 7-15 overall and 4-11 in the league. The Lakers will return to action on Monday, hosting Georgia College in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
Benford led the Lakers in the victory, scoring 24 points to go along with nine rebounds. She hit 10-of-14 shots from the field. Guard Tiayra Green added 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Guard Bena Hanyard had an all-around good game with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Jackson chipped in 10 points for the team.
For Montevallo, Beverly led the way with 16 points and 10 boards, followed by guard Jacquelyn Thompson with 14 points. Guard Jasmine Thompson added 13 points, followed by forward Katie Colson chipping in 10 points and pulling seven boards.
The Clayton State defense was once again shined, holding the Falcons to 34 percent (22-of-64) shooting for the game. The Lakers hit 49 percent (28-of-57) from the floor. Clayton State held a 42-35 edge on the boards and committed 20 turnovers compared to 15 for Montevallo.
The Lakers controlled the paint outscoring the Falcons 36-16 inside.
