Gene Smith comes to Clayton State from nearby Peachtree City where he serves as the Girls Director and USL W Head Coach at MOBA Soccer Academy.
Smith, who brings close to 19 years of coaching experience that spans all three NCAA divisions, joins the Clayton State Women’s Soccer program after last serving as the Head Coach at Colby-Sawyer university in 2018-2020. Previously he spent two seasons as the head coach at Division I Marist College. As the women's soccer head coach in 2017, Smith guided the Red Foxes to an 8-8-3 overall record and a 5-3-2 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). He was an assistant coach in 2016.
Prior to Marist, Smith was the women's soccer head coach for two years at Division II Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. Smith led the Senators to a 25-11-3 overall record, was named Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Coach of the Year, won a regular season championship, earned an NCAA Midwest Regional Ranking, and coached several all-conference honorees and major award winners. Previously, Smith led a top 5 nationally ranked program at Division II California University of Pennsylvania. The team was 34-8-3 under Smith's tutelage and reached the NCAA second round in 2012 and third round in 2013.Smith also spent five seasons as the women's soccer head coach at DIII Plymouth State.
Smith received a BA in Psychology from Norwich University and an MS in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University. He also received an MBA from California University of Pennsylvania.
