A highly accomplished professional, Roane brought 10 years of experience to the Lakers training staff, all of which are at the college level, when she joined Clayton State in August of 2014.
Â
CLAYTON STATE (2014-PRESENT, HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER)
In her role as head of Sports Medicine, Roane oversees all aspects of the department, including three graduate assistant athletic trainers. Her duties include ensuring all student-athlete physicals are completed in accordance with NCAA and institutional regulations as well as filing proper paperwork on those physicals.
Â
Additionally, she was a 2016 recipient of a Minority Opportunities Athletic Association/NCAA Division II Grant. That included a 2016-17 MOAA membership and attendance at the MOAA Symposium and NCAA Division II Governance Academy.
Â
SIMMONS COLLEGE (2007-14, HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER)
Prior to joining Clayton State, Roane served as the head athletic trainer at Division III Simmons College in Boston, Mass. from August of 2007 through June of 2014. During her time with the Sharks she was responsible for the assessment, care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries suffered by any of the 225 student-athletes comprising 10 teams.
Â
As part of a comprehensive plan, she developed and implemented a medical clearance process for all student-athletes beginning with the 2008-09 campaign that included developing the necessary forms and documentation. In 2011, Roane transitioned that process online using the Athletic Trainer System.
Â
Using that system, she maintained complete injury documentation for all student-athletes and implemented yearly concussion screenings along with creating an education program to raise awareness throughout the department.
Â
Roane also worked with various specialty groups, both internal and external, to develop a streamlined and extensive network of service available to all of the Sharks student-athletes. This included the college health center, college counseling center, team orthopedics and a number of specialty health care providers.
Â
She was also responsible for coordinating and scheduling of all hours of operation for the athletic training department, traveled with teams to postseason competitions and helped to illustrate the need of that department to expand beyond just one trainer. As a result, Simmons produced the funding for per diem athletic trainers and eventually hired one part-time trainer, all of whom were overseen by Roane.
Â
In addition to her direct responsibilities of working with the Sharks 10 teams and student-athletes, she not only maintained the athletic training budget and inventory but was directly responsible for designing and outfitting a future off-site athletic training facility.
Â
UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME (2004-07, ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER)
Prior to her time at Simmons, Roane was an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Notre Dame, handling the coverage of the Fighting Irish’s men’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s track & field programs. She also assisted with the coverage of all 21 Division I sports with an emphasis on spring sports’ fall competitions.
Â
PRECISION ATHLETIC TRAINING (2009-14)
Additionally, Roane has worked at Precision Athletic Training (Boston, Mass.) from 2009-14, providing per diem athletic training services to middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities and camps and club sports in and around the Boston area.
Â
CERTIFICATIONS AND MEMBERSHIPS
She has also continued to further her education within her field, attending various seminars and symposia since 2009. That has included the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) Annual Convention in 2013 (Las Vegas, Nev.) and 2011 (New Orleans, Louisiana) as well as the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital Sports Medicine Symposium in 2010.
Â
Roane holds multiple certifications and memberships, including licensure in Massachusetts, membership in the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and certification through the American Heart Association as a BLS Healthcare Provider.
Â
EDUCATION
Roane is a 2002 Magna cum Laude graduate of Morgan State University, earning a Bachelor’s in Health Education with an Athletic Training concentration. She served as a student athletic trainer for four years at MSU, working with cross country, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, softball and cheerleading, before completing a Master of Science in Sports Medicine from Georgia State University in 2004.
