Tony LaMarr

A former head coach at Clark Atlanta, LaMarr joined Clayton State as an assistant men’s basketball coach prior to the 2016-17 season. He brings 10 years of experience as a coach, player and scout at the professional, collegiate and high school level to the Lakers.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Most recently he served as developmental coach for three months with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Atlanta Hawks.

While there he was responsible for on-court instruction at camps and clinics as well as coordination of daily basketball drills and skill development activities. He has also been the director of the European Pro Showcase.

CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY (2010-16)
His stint with the Hawks followed a six-year tenure at NCAA Division II Clark Atlanta from 2010-16 that saw him serve as an assistant coach for three seasons before being elevated to head coach.

During his time as an assistant he helped guide the Panthers to a 22-9 overall record in 2010-11. That year the program won its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship in 46 years, defeating Stillman 78-71. That earned CAU a return trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Following the 2012-13 campaign, LaMarr was presented the opportunity to serve as Clark Atlanta’s interim head coach and took full advantage of it. In his first season, 2013-14, he led the team to a 15-12 overall record. Not only was it an impressive 11 win improvement over the previous season, but it also produced the third best winning percentage (.555) in a 14-year span.

That season he coached All-SIAC performer Jarrel Joye (16.5 ppg., 4.0 rpg., 3.0 apg.) and was nominated for Coach of the Year following a surprising third place finish in the regular season.

In addition to the on-court performance, LaMarr made sure his players handled their responsibilities in the classroom. In addition to having 30 selections to the SAAC Clark Atlanta All-Academic Team (3.0 GPA min.) in just three seasons, he also coached two individuals that had the highest GPA in the SIAC in Derek Harper (4.0) and Kenneth Green (3.75).

On the court he coached five All-SIAC players, including Najee Lane, David Brown, Royce Hamilton and Tim Sanders in addition to Joye. That group included a SIAC Player of the Year in Lane and a P-of-Y contender (Sanders). Lane also surpassed 1,000 career points under LaMarr’s leadership and Derek Harper enters 2016-17 within 141 points of doing the same. He would finish his time at Clark Atlanta with an overall record of 31-53.

FORT VALLEY STATE, LAWSON STATE C.C. AND HIGH SCHOOL
Before coming to CAU, the native of Stone Mountain, Georgia spent one season at Division II Fort Valley State as an associate head coach in 2009-10 and one at Lawson State Community College (2008-09). At both stops he served as the recruiting coordinator and handled scouting and player development in addition to on-floor coaching.

Prior to breaking into college coaching LaMarr earned his stripes at the high school level. He coached at both Shiloh High School and Central Gwinnett High School, coaching a combined five players that went on to play at the NCAA Division I level.

PLAYING CAREER
As a player he began his career at Tucker High School (Tucker, Ga.) where he earned All-State and Dekalb County Player of the Year honors. He was also named to the All-Metro Atlanta Team before playing for Itawamba Community College.

While at ICC he would be named an All-Region and All-Conference selection before finishing his collegiate playing career at Morris Brown College.
