Men's Soccer Picks up Road Win at Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday Evening

Arttu Leivonen scored a pair of goals for the Lakers

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team took care of business on the road as they defeated Georgia Southwestern, 3-1, on Wednesday evening.

The Lakers came out firing in the first half and scored early.  In the 18th minute, Joao Amaral delivered a brilliant cross to Fabian Wagner, and he fired a shot into the back of the net for a goal making the score, 1-0.  Clayton State then continued to put pressure on the GSW keeper as Adrian Gallegos and Adrian Lopez all marked shots, but the score remained at 1-0.  Later in the half, the Lakers doubled up on the Hurricanes.  Amaral, once again, sent in an excellent ball into the box and found the foot of Arttu Leivonen and he finished for his fourth goal of the season as the Lakers took a 2-0 lead.

That score would hold true going into the halftime break.

Halftime: Clayton State 2, Georgia Southwestern 0

With their backs up against the wall, the Hurricanes brought some early pressure to Kalle Kuisma and the Clayton State defense to start the second half.  The Hurricanes sent in three corner balls and four shots in the first 15 minutes.  The match then shifted to the Lakers continuing to press GSW as Lopez, Casper Hyypia, and Gallegos all attempted shots.  The score remained at 2-0.

The Lakers added a goal in the 89th minute as Lucas Schofield found Leivonen for a goal and made the score, 3-0.  Georgia Southwestern then found the back of the net in the final minute of play but the Lakers earned three points as they won the match, 3-1.
