Men's Soccer Draws Even With Lander on Friday Afternoon

Arttu Leivonen scored the lone goal for the Lakers

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team hosted Lander University at Laker Field on Wednesday afternoon.  The Lakers and Bearcats ended 90 minutes deadlocked at one. 
 
Both teams played a possession game in the majority of the first half as the Lakers held the ball for 56% of the half.  Both teams had chances but neither team could find the back of the net.  The Lakers led Lander, 7-2, on shots attempted.  Arttu Leivonen led the team with four shots.  Arttu had the best opportunity as his shot in the 28th minute just missed the net.  Lander had their best chance in the 43rd minute but his shot hit woodwork.

The Lakers controlled most of the possession in the second half and notched 10 shots.  The Lakers then opened the scoring.  In the 67th minute, Eric Cruz sent in a cross to Leivonen who finished for a goal.  Arttu put the Lakers up 1-0.  The Laker defense held strong most of the half as Lander continued to put on pressure. Cruz and Camilo Velez attempted shots during the later in the half. 
 
Lander put some pressure on the Laker defense in the final minute of play forcing a corner kick.  Lander then, with five second left, found the back of the net and evened the match at one.

  • Leivonen scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season. 
  • Cruz notched his second assist of the season.
  • The Lakers outshot the Bearcats, 17-5 and 5-1 on shots on frame.
