Women's Soccer Picks Up First Win of the Season on Saturday Evening

Aniyah Vargas scored both Laker goals & Ricky Clarke picks up his first career Laker victory

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team concluded its tour around the Sunshine State playing Barry University on Saturday evening. The Lakers shut out the Buccaneers, 2-0.  With this win, head coach Ricky Clarke earned his first win of his Laker career.  



 
The Lakers and Buccaneers ended the first 45 minutes in a 0-0 draw.  The Lakers brought the offensive pressure early as they sent in five corner kicks and fired in four shots.  Aniyah Vargas, Amiah Sprunger-Hightower, Adoria Sanders, and Xenia Jacobsen recorded shots for the Lakers.  In net, Rubie Kelley made four saves after making seven saves on Thursday evening against Rollins.

The Lakers started off the second half strong.  In the 52nd minute, off a pass by Karley Perry,  freshman Aniyah Vargas knocked in her first goal of the season and made the score, 1-0.  The Lakers looked to Claire Smith, in the second half, to protect the lead and she was busy.  She faced 11 shots in the half and made a pair of saves.  The Lakers then saw shots from Perry and Dayla Ayada until the Lakers struck again.  In the 75th minute, Hanna Karlsson fed Vargas who scored her second goal of the match and made the score, 2-0. 
 
Barry sent in five shots in the final 15 minutes, but the Lakers completed the shut out and beat the Buccaneers, 2-0.
