SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team wrapped up its three-match road trip in a rematch of the 2024 NCAA DII Tournament Round of 32, against Converse University. The Lakers blanked Converse, 3-0.
The two teams only combined for eight shots in the first half, but the Lakers tacked on the match's first goal. In the 11
th minute,
Gonzalo LaChica kicked the ball to the far side corner to
Andree Jimenez who fed the sprinting
Camilo Velez for the goal. Clayton State led the Converse, 1-0. The Lakers did not have a real scoring chance until they knocked in another goal later in the half. In the 27
th minute, off a beautiful cross from
Fabian Wagner, LaChica headed a ball which found the back of the net for a goal. The Lakers took a 2-0 lead.
The rest of the half proved to be a possession battle as Clayton State took a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.

The Valkyries peppered Laker keeper
Kalle Kuisma with five shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but the Lakers still led, 2-0. The Lakers then saw shots from Garbhan Fenney, Wagner, and LaChica. Clayton State then kept the pressure on Converse and extended their lead. In the 81
st minute,
Emmanuel Alerte was trying to send a shot in, but his shot went to
Joao Amaral who knocked in a goal. The Lakers led, 3-0.
Kuisma picked up his first career shutout in a Laker uniform as CSU won the match, 3-0.
