Feeney's Free Kick Goal Lifts the Lakers over Middle Georgia on Wednesday

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team welcomed the Knights of Middle Georgia State University to a rainy and wet Laker Field on Wednesday evening.  The Lakers saw a late goal by Garbhan Feeney and defeated the Knights, 1-0.

The Lakers saw plenty of opportunities in the first half.  In the fourth minute of the match, Feeney sent in a shot that just hit woodwork and kept the score at 0-0.  Clayton State also saw shots by Eric Cruz, Camilo Velez, and Andree Jimenez in the early going of the first half.  The Lakers also had a golden opportunity in the 39th minute.  The Lakers were awarded a penalty kick but were unable to breakthrough.  The score remained at 0-0.

The Lakers and Knights took the 0-0 score going into the halftime break.

Halftime: Clayton State 0, MGA 0

The Lakers peppered and pressured the Knight defensive unit in the second half as they fired in a whopping 21 shots.  Joao Amaral and Manoel Neto each saw shot attempts in the first 10 minutes.  The Knights then saw their best opportunity to score.  In the 67th minute, a MGA attacker got past a Laker defender and went 1v1 into the box but Kalle Kuisma got his fingertips on it and pushed the ball aside for a terrific save to keep the match at 0-0.

After that Knight opportunity, The Lakers sent in seven shots in the next three minutes, but the MGA keeper and the Knight defensive unit snuffed out all opportunities.  The Lakers kept up the pressure offensively throughout the half and finally pulled through towards the end.  In the 88th minute, a Laker attacker was fouled just outside the 18 and gave Feeney an opportunity at net and he bent in a shot and went top shelf for a goal.  The Lakers led, 1-0.

The Lakers showed a lot of grit and resilience and came away with a 1-0 victory over Middle Georgia.
