CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team opened its 2024 season on a high note as they defeated Delta State, 4-1, at Delta Field on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
The Lakers dominated the first half as they outshot the Lady Statesmen, 13-3. Clayton State rang the cash register first in the 11
th minute. After a pair of one-touch passes from
Madison Nicolas and
Chloe Flannaghan,
Carrie Consolino scored her first goal of the match and made the score, 1-0. The Lakers kept the pressure on Delta State as they struck again in the 17
th minute. Laker newcomer
Hanna Karlsson scored her first career goal and made the score, 2-0. The Lakers were not done yet as Consolino knocked in her second goal of the match in the 23
rd minute, making the score, 3-0.
The Lakers saw shots from
Amiah Sprunger-Hightower,
Nyeemah Lucky, and
Jessica Fuentes down the stretch in the half, but the lead was 3-0 going into the halftime break.

The Lady Statesmen opened the scoring in the second half with a goal in the 54
th minute and cut their deficit to, 3-1. Overall, the second half played a bit more evenly matched as there were only a combined seven shots taken. The Lakers cashed in one more goal later in the half. Off a pass from Sprunger-Hightower,
Leah Agrell knocked in her first career goal as a Laker and extended the lead to 4-1.
The Lakers went wire-to-wire and earned their first win of the season defeating Delta State, 4-1.
