Women's Track & Field | March 16, 2024
ATLANTA – The Clayton State University track & field teams competed in the Emory Spring Break Classic on Friday and Saturday. Coach Brown saw some excellent performances on both the track and in the field. The men's team finished the meet in eighth place while the women finished in seventh. Both were out of 18 schools.
FRIDAY ACTION
Action on the track got started in the 200m dash as
Ariyonna Jones and
Cayla Brown finished in third and fifth place with time of 25.20 and 25.48.
Journie Alexander also finished in ninth in the race with a time of 25.73. In the 1500m run,
Camron Gaddis gathered points for the Lakers with an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:02.84. In the 3K steeplechase,
Tanaeya Johnson broke her own school record with a third-place finish and a time of 12:03.47.
Story Alexander finished sixth in the race with a time of 12:50.30.
In the field events, Alexander finished second in the long jump with final mark of 5.44m.
Trinity Acree finished in fifth with a final mark of 5.13m. In the men's long jump,
Adarius Andrews and
Rodney Crawford finished eighth and ninth with marks of 6.29m and 6.27m. Action on Friday ended in the men's high jump with
Freddie Hawkins taking the crown with a final mark of 1.90m.
Kahmani Zachery finished fourth in the event with a final height of 1.85.
The Laker men's team finished in eighth place after one day while the women stood in sixth.
SATURDAY ACTION
Action on the track started in the 4x800 meter relays. On the women's side, the team of
JaBresha Palmer,
Ahlana Failey, Johnson, and
Ivorie Smith finished in second place with a time of 9:47.51. On the men's side, the team of
Nehemiah Horton,
Rakiem Barnes,
Lance Little, and
Sancho Smith won the race with a time of 7:52.47. The Lakers beat Columbus State who finished second in the race. In the 4x100 meter relay, the women's team of Jones, Alexander,
Jada Jenkins, and Brown finished in third with a time of 48.09. On the men's side, the team of
Titus Hand,
Christopher Hart,
Davonte Jackson, and
Kelvin Oppong finished in fifth with a time of 42.41.
In the 110m hurdles, Jackson qualified for finals with a sixth-place finish in the prelims with a time of 15.81. Jackson then finished sixth in the finals with a time of 16.03. In the 400m dash, Jones won the race with a time of 56.82. That time also broke Keisha Etienne's school record that was set in 2009.
Kennedy McDonald finished fourth in the race with a time of 58.63. In the 800m run, Palmer finished in seventh with a final time of 2:20.83. On the men's side,
Sancho Smith finished in sixth crossing the finish line with a time of 1:57.89. Gaddis and Horton finished in 11
th and 13
th, respectively.
The Lakers finished the meet in the 4x400 meter relay. On the women's side, the team of Palmer, McDonald, Smith, and Jones finished fifth with a time of 4:04.14. The men's team of
Da'Tavion Lawson, Jackson, Andrews, and Barnes finished in seventh place with a time of 3:23.83.
The only action for the Lakers in the field was the triple jump. On the women's side, Acree finished in fourth place with a final mark of 10.82m.
Jaazer Ridges finished in seventh in the event with a final mark of 10.51m.
